Spanish Phrases Meaning Unless

A menos que and a no ser que are two of the most common ways in Spanish to express the idea behind the English conjunction unless. Because the verb following either one of these phrases refers to something that hasnt happened yet and may never happen, it typically is in the subjunctive mood. In a sense, these phrases are used in making negative conditions, or the opposite of si or if. In other words, these phrases are used to indicate that if a certain event (the one specified by a verb in the subjunctive mood) does not occur, then another event (using a verb in the indicative mood) will (or would, if the conditional tense is used). Here are some examples using a menos que: A menos que tengas pasià ³n en lo que haces, no vas a ser feliz. Unless you have passion about what youre doing, youre not going to be happy. No aprobarà ¡s a menos que estudies mucho. You wont pass unless you study a lot. A menos que el mundo despierte, la humanidad no tiene futuro. A menos que estuviera muy enojado, llorarà a. Unless I were very angry, I would cry. No podemos tener salud a menos que bebamos unos ocho vasos de agua al dà a. We cant be healthy unless we drink some eight glasses of water a day. A no ser que is used in the same way and is nearly always interchangeable with a menos que: Va a ser difà cil, a no ser que nieve bastante. Its going to be difficult, unless it snows enough. La vida no es buena a no ser que uno tenga dinero. Life isnt good unless one has money. No tendremos à ©xito a no ser que tengamos una visià ³n global. We wont have success unless we have a global vision. La vida no es aceptable a no ser que el cuerpo y el espà ritu vivan en armonà a. Life isnt acceptable unless the body and spirit live in harmony. These phrases can also be used along with commands instead of a verb in the indicative in the independent clause: No lo haga a menos que comprenda todos los riesgos. Dont do it unless you understand all the risks. Cà ³mpralo, a no ser que tengas dudas. Buy it, unless you have doubts. Spanish also has several other less common phrases that have much the same meaning, as shown in boldface in the sentences below: Un cuerpo permanecerà ¡ en un estado de reposo o de movimiento uniforme, a menos de que una fuerza externa actà ºe sobre à ©l. A body will remain in a state of rest or steady motion, unless an external force acts on it. Se recomienda no utilizarlo a reserva de que sea claramente necesario. Silverwater is located in western Sydney in New South Wales, Australia in the suburbs. It is situated almost 20 kilometers away from Sydney on southern banks of Parramatta River(Property, Retrieved on 15th November 2017). The place provides a good location to multiple medium and small businesses with its low rental, lease rates the location provides immense space for warehouse facility. There are multiple number of companies that are operating in the place for over 50 years due to its connectivity to central Sydney location. The location was developed primarily to provide for medium and heavy industrial areas. It mainly caters to industrial locations with a few residential areas(Baum, 2008). Red Yard primarily houses a number of restaurants and commercial complexes. The scope of the current study analyses economics related to the location in retail property segment of Silverwat er. It also encompasses its current analysis in Property Clock and further depiction as to where it is expected to reach in future. Silverwater offers steady connectivity to Sydney which offers immense opportunity for growth and developments(Ashton, 2010). City of Paramatta Council has taken UrbanGrowth NSW development with state and local government agencies. The development of Parramatta Road Corridor Strategy have further led to development of Retail and Commercial Market Demands. The Councils strategy planning has established long-term vision along with planning framework that incorporates transport, infrastructure, economic measures, public domain and various other measures. With such measures there has been tremendous setting up of Retail and Commercial Market Demand Study led to demand of quantum of retail along with commercial floor space(Chung, 2016). Developments in the area has been planned identifying population growth in population of Sydney and changing economic structures along with sustainable methods. There are ways devised ways and means by which existing infrastructure to increase retail segmen t development. Renewal of existing urban areas for increasing greater retail space for service or transportation purposes. Mostly the area includes small retail stores of commercial holding with absence of major retail brands in the area(Davidson, 2012). Majority of retail properties across Silverware are available on leases which varies depending on specific areas. Analysis of macro factors in the area reflects that political influence on the area is impacted by Council from City of Paramatta(Gumtree, Retrieved on 15th November 2017). Sydney businesses have been impacted by means of changing dollar, competition from overseas market, changing trends of consumers due to globalisation and increased competition from overseas market. There has been higher input costs in the industry as compared to neighboring markets hence due to rising cost pressures many businesses are seeking for productivity gains leveraging(Tranter, 2099). There are a multiple number of companies who have offshored their production units in view of rising costs from products especially in automotive and furniture sector. The Council takes major decisions and applies bureaucratic control for development and growth related to the area. There is road connectivity and other railway access that is being developed such that the area can prosper and can lead to further investment opportunities in the future(Zhou, 2016). Economic determinant of the area reflects that there remains high scopes for development with presence of a number of mining companies along with location of several other large companies. The location is more or less economically independent that allows for further prospects of development. Social factors like demographic and other cultural trends in the area are relatively low with low levels of population. There is a limited number of people residing in the area with very little jobs prospects to work in companies located in the region(Symes, 2007). Social investments in the area is relatively less with schools and hospitals located at further vicinity. Legal factors within the area provi des that all its jurisdictions falls under the city of Parramatta. Environmental standards placed within the locality are however low as against to other localities. As there is a high level of environmental pollution existing at the location with several factories and warehouse facilities and travel related infrastructure present(Baum, 2008). The location is extremely well suited and can cater to large number of large retailers that can act as drivers to growth and development of the region. Large format retailing has begun in recent year period and includes bulky goods along with retail showroom usage. Silverwater acts as a warehouse facility for many companies it can make use of its retail space and include large format retailing to include accessories, automotive arts, camping outdoors, repairs and services, pet supplies, electric light fittings, furniture, bedding and so on(auspost.com.au, Retrieved on 16th November 2017). Such large format retailing stores are absent in nearby areas and the location can act as a hub providing space and adding to the facility for the same. Happenings in past, present and future predictions The location of Silverwater is such that it provides high connectivity to various locations especially to Sydneys central business district. Roadways, bus services, connect the location, however there is still no accessibility to the place by means of railway networks(Render, 2014). It was only in May 2016 that Silverwater became City of Paramattas local government area from Auburn City Council. Historically all developments and growth I n the city had been attributed to Auburn Council ever since 1906. Earlier inhabitants of the area includes Wangal clan of the Eora or Tharawal culture. The area had European settlements that dates back to 1797 ever since Captain Henry Waterhouse and Lieutenant John Shortland of the Sirius received the land. Post such period the land was granted to John Blaxland and Greogory Blaxland(domain.com.au, Retrieved on 15th November 2015). They started with agricultural enterprise, salt making factory along with breeding cattle, which later led to setting up of manufacturing of tweed and blankets. Silverwater is also often referred to as North Auburn due to its close proximity to Auburn North Public School. In the past it primarily acted as a land for use of persons who held them but recently it has flourished to include industrial areas with parks, institutions and residential properties as well(Scholz, 2013). It comprises of a small population of 5,043 with various business factories being set-up there. Landmarks in the area are Silverwater Correctional Complex, Silverwater Baths, Silverwater Bridge and Silverwater Fire Station. Silverwater has come to become a major retail property space allowing for immense developments and prospects in the future. Prices in the area are affordable in regards to rent, leases as well as purchases. Markets in the area are not yet saturated which provides immense capabilities for further expansion. Investors can take advantage of the current situation prevailing at the location and develop several prop erties for future sale in the locality(Council, 2011). It can be used to attract several companies from major city locations to this destination with building up of roadways connectivity in the area. The area can provide comparative benefits of low prices and connectivity that can make it a major attraction for retail spaces for large as well as smaller companies. Thus, the future trend of the market looks attractive as against its present and past. It can cater to becoming a retail hub in near future with further developments. Overall economic climate in Australia had been fluctuating in recent past(Brown, 2009). Globally economic markets had been on a constant downturn with various sectors of the economy suffering highly. In Australia various places property markets have rallied in recent past and reached almost its peak levels. Some researchers argue that investors due to low rates of interests in various markets have been investing in Australian property markets especially retail spaces. With large number of immigrants coming into the country from various other locations there is need for retail spaces in suburbs especially where these people can meet the daily necessities(Tice, 2015). Such dispositions have been able to attract tremendous interests from global investors. With development of road infrastructure in the region, it will allow aligning with national industries of opportunities or future growth with locational factors that can affect business growth as well as growth of employment. Retail in volves an evolving fast moving consumer sector that is driven with technology, consumer tastes, social, demographic and other factors. Retail Floor space has increased in Australia from 1.5sqm per capita in 1985 to 2.3sqm per capita at present. This sector depicts an annual growth rate of 1.5% at an average(Obeng-Odoom, 2016). Such rise in retail floor spaces has been affected by real increase in income levels. With Silverwater having continuous increase in spending income levels, retail industry has evolved in the region and is expected to further grow with increasing in immigration capabilities. Rising diversity in retail formats has had a growing affluence that population of Silverwater has experienced. There have been development of shopping centers, supermarkets, homemaker centers, outlet centers and other store formats that has led to rise in convenience. Online shopping has also evolved in the recent period with consumer selecting products and having them delivered at their d oorsteps(Vejdean, 2015). Interest rates in the economy are constantly dropping and there are expectations that provides that it will drop further in the future. With fluctuating and lowered rates of interests there can be high amounts of possibility that investors will look for avenues other than banks and depository papers or bonds to park their funds into. Silverwater forms a part of ambitious prospects for many investors and with Parramatta roadways further developing it can attract large pool of funds. Inflation rates on the other hand had been constant more or less with rising trends providing depicting limited opportunities for increasing affordability for consumers. Individual consumers of retail property spaces had been suffering to a large extent with rising property rates and unaffordable rent rates. Leases has also been escalating in recent periods depicting further rising prices of goods and services. GDP of Australia has been increasing at a minor rate in the recent period mostly stagnating. Productivity in the country primarily in Silverwater region has been dependent on mining. Mining exports contribute to a sizable amount in the GDP and it has been growing by small amounts. Silverwater offers limited service related productivity that can contribute towards GDP as it is mostly production related of goods and various other items. Apart from mineral exports this region can support retail services as well with its ever growing retail spaces. Employment in Australia has been on a decline in recent period. There has been rising unemployment in the region, as most manufacturing companies in Australia are outsourcing their facility to low cost countries. Employment has become a major challenge in the Australian region with rising number of people losing their jobs in automotive, telecommunication and other sectors. However, Silverwater continues with its stable employment prospects in its mineral extraction industry. The locality can offer immense potential for employment prospects in the future with development of retail spaces that can provide a positive impetus in turn. with development of retail spaces in the area it is expected to employee around 6,000 to 8,000 people from the neighborhood population at full time retail stores. Consumer confidence within Australia had been dipping at a constant rate with in capabilities to cater to property rates. Affordability has gone down significantly across entire Australia but in Silverwater such is not the situation. Silverwater have been able to support positive affordability for its properties as against consumers income disposition. Consumer disposable incomes in the area is almost at par with national earnings rate provided by the center. Government Policy at the Federal level is immensely supportive of developments or growths related to the property markets. The City of Parramatta Council also aims at developing policy that can attract investors set up retail spaces and employ a large number of people. Government has also been providing affordable mortgage rates for development and setting up of retail properties in the area. Such endeavors along with bureaucratic relaxation on tax structures have provided large impetus to growth and development of properties in Silverwater. World events as recent economic downturn has immensely affected the entire globe with financial crisis. Australia too have been impacted from such financial downturns leading to a period of economic crisis. There had been fluctuations of interests rates, inflation rates, currency rates and market fluctuations as well that has forced a multiple number of investors into property markets for investing. Outsourcing has been a major game changer in Australia with majority of production and service related jobs from automobile, telecommunications and other industries going to less developed countries. Australia has become an expensive destination for manufacturing as well as for services. Hence, there has been a tremendous decline in productivity of manufacturing as well as services in the country. Terrorism activities has also affected various industries around the world and affected productivity. Australia has seen in a change in its social structure that has impacted its business relati onships with several other countries. Silverwater being a small destination across NSW have been able to manage and sustain its growth due to its low levels of reliance on a large number of economic activities. Its small population has also been able to support its robust growth and development related infrastructures. Inter-relationships exists amongst the various macro as well as micro economic variables of the country as well as across smaller locations as Silverwater. The location owes its development to the connectivity it gets from with Sydney CBD and City of Parramatta. Such connectivity allows development in the region and also its robust growth infrastructure. It also allows experienced property investors to purchase or sell their properties at appropriate selling or purchase time. Every property markets around the world and also across Australia undergoes a period of transition through a cycle and in case an investor is able to sell or invest or purchase property at the right time then it can lead to a difference in thousands of dollars being made in their investments. It allows tracking of the property market cycle and is based upon the well-known stages of a property cycle which can start from a boom, where prices of property are highest to bust, where prices in property market touches bottom of the cycle, further initiating the cycle towards a boom period. Analysing location Silverwater in the Property Clock it can be said that it had usually been at the bottom of the market till time of globalisation came and then the location started to get various economic impe tus. Silverwater had been functioning as a factory or warehouse facility for last 50 years. It had been functioning as a mere facility location, but the recent transfer of the Council to City of Parramatta and development of road infrastructure has led to development of various facility at the location. Silverwater is now being visualized more as an individualistic location than a mere facility space, it now has a growing population with various self-capable shops and restaurants to cater to the needs of the location. With decent rise in population over the past few years, there has been a steady rise in property prices in the place. Rent rates, lease rates and other property prices of retail especially which are centrally located are continually on the rise. Though entire Australia real-estate market have slid in the recent period with prices getting slashed at various locations, Silverwater had been able to maintain a steady rate. Silverwater gradually is on the verge of approaching ris ing market with its property prices gradually escalating with rising demands. The rising market prices of the retail properties have immense opportunities for sellers of retail properties in the area to gain from lease as well as sell of properties. Rental incomes in the area has also increased of retail spaces along with commercial space. Returns from rents have increased tremendously in the area, which reflects that demand of properties has been rising. Investors and property dealers can pick-up new properties in the area and hold on till prices goes to peak levels. In cases of sellers of retail spaces they can wait till prices soar above average levels in the area allowing for opportunities to make abnormal profits. Such periods of time investing or selling according to Property Clock timings will allow greater profitability and gains that can be used for other investment purposes. Though Property Clock depicts appropriate prices for buyers, sellers and investors of retail spaces , there still remains risks from unexpected economic or market related developments that can set deviations in property cycle. Sometimes it reflects short-term view of the market with long-term benefits in investment property portfolio. During periods of stagnation or downsizing period there is a possibility for generating money in real estate. Conclusion Property market analysis of Silverwater reflects increased geographic opportunities in commercial, industrial, residential and retail sectors. A diversified range of properties are getting built with multiple land uses with built forms. Tom and Christianity in Uncle Toms Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Tom and Christianity in Uncle Toms Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe There are times in our lives when we are confronted with challenges that we feel we can never overcome. We are left with a sense of emptiness, hopelessness, and defeat; it is often in these situations that our religious faith is tested and is either strengthened or weakened. In Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, she demonstrates how her protagonist, Tom, upholds his ideals and dedication as a Christian despite the cruelties he faces as a slave in the Deep South in the 1800s. Tom attests his faith time and again as he tries to bring St. Clare to know God, as he supports Eva in her journey to discover her Christian faith, and as his own faith is challenged through the inhumane beatings and mental torture he suffers.Tom displays his Christian demeanor concerning one of his owners, Augustine St. Clare, when he attempts to help St.Simon Legree and Uncle Tom: A scene from the aboli...Clare in allowing God to work in his heart. St. Clare lives an extravagant lifestyle, always attending parties and often stumbling home drunk, spending money excessively, and neglecting his duties as a husband and a father. This behavior saddens Tom, as he witnesses how few moral standards St. Clare upholds and how his profligate lifestyle is obstructing any chance for God to work in his life. As a result of Tom's feelings and his innate need to help others, he becomes exceptionally close to St. Clare; soon Tom is St. Clare's most trusted and devoted friend. Through this strong bond, Tom is able to open St. Clare's eyes to how little self-respect his way of life holds for him; eventually, this leads to the discussion of religion and Christianity. St. Clare, at first, believes he is unworthy of the love of God because of the previous lifestyle he...

Discuss the importance of Emptiness in swordsmanship Essay

Discuss the importance of Emptiness in swordsmanship - Essay Example The mind enters into a state of emptiness. This state of emptiness is akin to a cup which is empty, ready to be filled. It is a force that is boundless and forms the mind facet that is central to the practitioner of kendo, and which the practitioner will experience during practice. The importance of emptiness can not be over stressed. It is of significance importance that one conquers the disturbance that is inside him, since fear arises within the body of oneself. Then, the swordsman is ready to face opponents (Westgeest 65). Mushin, or emptiness, extricates all concerns that are extraneous, focusing the body, mind, spirit and the moment, and allows all to function in a harmony that is fluid. This allows transformation of these entities, usually separate, into an action that is unitary in form and purpose (Westgeest 65). This spiritual and mental development accompanying kendo study has remained, passed on from one generation to another, mostly of warriors. Emptiness can trace its roots in Zen Buddhism, where meditation of monks involved a similar act of emptiness during prayer. It is thus not surprising to note that the code of swordsmen, known as Bushido, has its roots in Zen Buddhism and also in Shintoism. Shintoism is another root factor in the development of emptiness in

IP 19 and API 2001 fire prevention and protection systems in major Research Paper

IP 19 and API 2001 fire prevention and protection systems in major processing facility - Research Paper Example PI 2001 & IP 19 along with a lot of other international codes provide specific parameters that are to be followed in preventing the occurrence of fires and other calamities in a refinery area. Fuel, oxygen which is present in the atmosphere and heat mixed in the right proportions are the necessary ingredients that are required to begin and sustain a fire. (API 2001, 2005, p.3) Cutting off the supply of any one parameter shall assist in controlling the fire. Vapor pressure, Flash point, Flame point & boiling point are some of the reference parameters that are used in defining a hazard posed by a particular flammable liquid. Petroleum products which have a certain degree of volatility always releases small amount of vapors at ambient temperature. This release increase’s as the temperature rises. Vapor pressure is thus defined as the pressure exerted by the vapor of the substance when both the vapor and the substance are in equilibrium. Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to produce a flammable mixture. These vapors will ignite but will not continue to burn. At a Based on the flash point, fuels are classified into flammable liquids and combustible liquids. Flammable liquids have flash points below 100Â º F and vapor pressure not exceeding 40 psia while Combustible liquids have a flash point at or above 100Â º F. (API 2001, 2005, p.3) Further flammable liquids are subdivided into 3 classes (in decreasing hazard) based on flash point and Class C: Fires involving electrical equipment are treated in this category. Class C fires are essentially a manifestation of Class A and Class B fires. Once the electric circuitry is de-energized and the source of electric rupture contained these fires are treated as Class A or Class B fires since these fires would then essentially progress via the combustible solid or liquid source lying in the vicinity of the fire. For fires to begin and propagate Oxygen, Heat and the flammable fuel may

Isadora Duncan And Modern Dance Drama Essay

Isadora Duncan And Modern Dance Drama Essay During twentieth century, there was a new dance form that was appearing in American, which was modern dance. It was to have a significant influence on the dance education. Modern dance has broken the rule of classical ballet. The theme of modern dance works might encompass Greek mythology; Ancient or modern poetry or other literary works; American folklore and legendry; major social issues; interpersonal relationships approached psychoanalytically; historical events; or, simply, abstract and lyrical works that had no theme or story line. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 114) Modern dance beginning with Isadora Duncan,(Kraus, Richard. Page, 112) she believed that dance should come from and be an expression of the spirit, inspired by nature; anything else was stilted and artificial. (Brown, Jean Morrison. Page, 7) Isadora Duncan was born in San Francisco, California in 1876. (Foster, Susan Leigh. Page, 116) Her family was artistic, her mother taught music, and young Isadora studied ballet. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 116) According to Richard Kraus, Isadora began to give dancing lessons at an early age. At the age of eighteen, she left for Chicago; Huang 2 then she gave concerts in New York at the Carnegie Hall in Greek vases and statuary. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 117) However, she soon broke away from the classic dance form, which did not suit her spirit. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 116) Isadora Duncan proclaimed a new era of dance beginning in 1903. (Foster, Susan Leigh. Page, 145) Her first appearance in Russia, in 1905, stimulated a controversy between the traditional balletomanes and critics and those who proposed reform of the ballet. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 117) Duncans choreographic vision did not depend as much on an understanding of Greek culture or mythology as on her conception of the Greeks ideas about the soul and the body. (Forster, Susan Leigh. Page, 145) She danced barefoot in simple, Greek tunics and scarves, and threw away the dancers costume, such as corsets, tutus, and ballet slippers at that period. Therefore, her performance was not in the sense of characterization and told a story. At that time, people took the Greek idea of perfection of body line, the gesture of classical ballet was limited and rigidly, such as feet turn out and arms holding position, controlling legs and turns in the air, or dancing on the pointes. Duncan reproached the classical ballerina with a false consciousness of the mechanical origin of movement that ballet was not only wrong about the body, it was unsyntactical, noncumulative, each action was an end, and no movement, pose or rhythm was successive or could be made to evolve succeeding action. (Kracauer, Siegfried. Page, 7) In nothing does Nature suggest jumps and breaks, there is between all the conditions of life a continuity or flow which the dancer must respect Huang 3 in his art, or else become a mannequin-outside nature and without true beauty (Brown, Jean Morrison. Page, 8) On the other way, Isadora Duncans movement found in nature, such simple action could influence her imagination to created steps. For example, she said: I was born by the sea, my first idea of movement of the dance, certainly came from the rhythm of the waves. (Brown, Jean Morrison. Page, 8) The majority of her picture shows, her dance movements were looks like quit simple and without brilliant dance technique, the arms were free flowing and extended, the gesture was freedom and no limited position. It was more a harmonious plasticity, swinging, swaying, flowing rhythms, with no marked dissonances, no little vibratory movements. (Constance, Garcia Barrio, Page, 19-22) Moreover, Duncans personal life was almost approach to her dance choreograph. Claiming she did not believe in marriage or monogamy. Duncan brought her feminist consciousness to the dance stage and introduced the soloist performance to dance audiences. For example her solo, Mother, illustrates how the play of idol and fetish becomes activated in the service of an essentialized female role. (Franko, Mark. Page, 10) Her efforts to reform the constricted movements of womens bodies in daily life and in theatrical self-display had meaning both externally for social life and internally for dance history. (Franko, Mark. Page, 2) She transferred the idea of a soul in physical form to the syllogism: female body equal to nature, nature equal to dance, therefore: female body equal to dance. Huang 4 (Franko, Mark. Page, 1 0) Duncans dancing presented woman as close to nature, emotion, and the unconscious while also enshrining nature in the solar plexus. (Franko, Mark. Page, 10) In my opinion, between ballet and modern dance, except gestures and movements different, there was another difference, which was performance stage. Palais Royal developed manner of the new Italian theater; it had an elevated stage on which the action took place at one end of the hall beneath a proscenium arch during 16 century. (Kraus, Richard. Page, 74) We can clearly see that ballet steps almost facing frontal since 16 century. This was easily for dancer only focus on one direction of audience, rather than on three sides of audience. That was why the dancers feet and leg became more and more turn out, instead of straight forward. Therefore, the performer separated from the audiences. On the contrast, the stage of modern dance could set something, sometimes the performer had interactive with audiences, audience could go on the stage, and saw the performer from difference direction. Maybe the dancer of modern dance does not care their back or bum facing to the audiences. Duncan on stage was notably austere; St. Denis often created opulent sets with sculptures and scenic backdrops to simulate exotic locales like Egypt or India. (Foster, Susan Leigh. Page 148) In conclusion, Isadora is known as the mother of  modern dance, not only she found a new form of dance, but she also brought a new idea to dance movements. Her choreograph was expressing an inner feeling about life and without discipline, and Huang 5 provide an unlimited imagination space that dancers could find our own style and translate our own feeling and character to dance movement. Huang 6

Othello †Racism Expressed in Words Essay -- Othello essays

Othello –   Racism Expressed in Words  Ã‚        Ã‚  Ã‚   The Bard of Avon’s tragic play Othello expresses racism; there is no doubt about this among most critics. However, to what degree – to a vulgar extent? Or to an excusable level?    In her book, Everybody’s Shakespeare: Reflections Chiefly on the Tragedies, Maynard Mack comments on the audience’s reaction to the black-white union in the play:    That a beautiful Venetian girl should fall in love with â€Å"a veritable negro† seemed to many implausible, in fact â€Å"monstrous.† The words are Coleridge’s, but the sentiment was widely shared and, on the nineteenth-century stage, was increasingly taken into account by â€Å"orientalizing† the hero, making him appear to be what one of the century’s best-known actor-directors declared he emphatically was: â€Å"not a negro† but â€Å"a stately Arab.† (129)    In the opening scene, while Iago is expressing his dislike, or rather hatred, for Othello for his having chosen Michael Cassio for the lieutenancy, he contrives a plan to partially avenge himself (â€Å"I follow him to serve my turn upon him†), with Roderigo’s assistance, by alerting Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, to the fact of his daughter’s elopement with Othello. Roderigo shares Iago’s prejudiced attitude toward Othello: â€Å"What a full fortune does the thicklips owe / If he can carry't thus!† The word thicklips is a disparaging reference to a facial characteristic of many members of the black race. David Bevington in William Shakespeare: Four Tragedies describes how racism is obvious from the very outset of the play:    Othello is unquestionably a black man, referred to disparagingly by his detractors as the â€Å"thick-lips,† with a â€Å"sooty bosom† (1.1.68; 1.2.71); Elizabethan usage ap... ...rsity. 1996. http://www.eiu.edu/~multilit/studyabroad/othello/othello_all.html No line nos.    Wayne, Valerie. â€Å"Historical Differences: Misogyny and Othello.† The Matter of Difference: Materialist Feminist Criticism of Shakespeare. Affirmative Action: the Sensitive and Controversial Essay

Affirmative action has been a sensitive and controversial topic in the workplace since its existence. People on both sides of this controversial topic have been at each other’s throats for years and it does not seem to be going away anytime soon. A plan created to ease the hiring process of a group of people has in fact created more division in this country more than any other topic. What is affirmative action after all? It is a policy designed to redress past discrimination against women and minority groups through measures to improve their economic and educational opportunities. (Wordnetweb.com, 2010) In this paper, the writer will describe the elements of affirmative action as it applies to public and private sector employers and how it interacts with Title VII requirements of Employment Opportunity. The paper will also determine what employers are subject to affirmative action plans and why, what do the plans require employers to do and what happens if employers do not mee t the goals of the affirmative action plan. This country has been dealing with the issue of discrimination for a long time. Affirmative action was created in order to reduce discrimination in the workplace and in school. As it applies to the public sector, affirmative action prevents businesses with fifteen or more employees from discriminating on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin and physical capability in practices relating to hiring, compensating, promoting, training and firing employees. (uslegal.com, 2010) It also it allows the state and federal governments to favor women-owned and minority-owned businesses when awarding contracts, and to reject bids from businesses that do not make good faith efforts to include minority-owned businesses among their subcontractors. (uslegal.com, 2010) When it comes to federal contractors and subcontractors, affirmative action must be taken by covered employers to recruit and advance qualified minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and covered veterans. (uslegal.com) this proves that affirmative action affect both private and public emplo yers. The difference between Title VII and affirmative action is simple. As defined by authors Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander and Laura P Hartman, â€Å"affirmative action is the intentional inclusion of women and minorities in the workplace based on finding of their previous exclusion.†(Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007); Whereas Title VII under the Civil Right Act of 1964 simply banned discrimination in employment. In other words, affirmative action requires employers both public and private to hire minorities and women in their establishments or face some consequences but under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it would be considered a crime to discriminate against a certain group based on race, color, religion and so on. â€Å"Title VII prohibits discrimination in employment but it does not impose affirmative duties on the employer. However, as a part of a remedies provided under Title VII, courts may order affirmative action. (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007) Based on the research conducted, it does not seem that affirmation action was part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Not every employer is subject to affirmative action. For example, a private company like Wal-Mart does not have to comply with affirmative action regulations. However this does not mean that they will not be fined for blatantly discriminating against any one person. Affirmative action plans only apply to pubic employers and contracts. According to Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander and Laura P Hartman, â€Å"employers who contract with the federal government to provide goods and services of $10,000 or more must agree must agree to comply with the executive order.† (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007). Affirmative action plan is defined as a government contractor’s plan containing placement goals for inclusion for women and minorities in the workplace and timetables for accomplishing the goals. (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007) In other words, the employer set some goals for hiring women and minorities and these goals must be met in a timely manner. In addition, the plan requires employer post in conspicuous places, available to employees and applicants, notices provided by the contracting officer setting forth the provisions of the nondiscrimination clause, include all the contractors’ solicitations or advertisements for employees a statement that all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, or national origin. (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007) The plan also requires employers to include a statement of these obligations in all subcontracts or purchase orders. (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007) Although the requirements under the affirmative action plan seems very strict, it is clear and the government does require full and detail explanation on how the plan is being implemented. As with everything else that the government is involved in, there are many consequences an employer can suffer if the plan is not followed properly. If an employer does not meet its target goals, in other words, is not in compliance with the action plan, there are several penalties which the federal government apply. According to Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, these penalties include publishing the names of nonconforming contractors or labor unions, recommending to the EEOC or the department of justice that proceedings be instituted under Title VII, cancelling, terminating, or suspending the contract or any portion thereof, for failure of the contractor or subcontractor to comply with the discrimination provisions of the contract. In addition, the government may debar the noncom plying contractor from entering into further contracts until the contractor has satisfied the secretary that it will abide by the provisions of the order. (Bennett-Alexander and Hartman, 2007 The question which remain debatable even in today’s society, is is affirmation action necessary? There is no real answer for this question because affirmative action has been such a divisive subjects that no one will really agree on it. There will always be those who are against it and think that it is reverse discrimination against white males and there will always be those who support it because they feel it has not done fully what it was meant to do. Either way, as controversial as it is, affirmative action will not go away any time soon until something else comes along. Do You Qualify for the National Merit Scholarship

Do You Qualify for the National Merit Scholarship SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Out of the 1.5 million juniors in the US who take the PSAT only about 7,600 will end up with a National Merit Scholarship of $2,500 through the National Merit Scholarship Program. So how do you qualify? If you do qualify, what are your chances of getting the scholarship? I am going to answer these questions by discussing the basic qualification for National Merit and laying out a timeline for the program. Qualification Guidelines There are four main qualifications for scholarship consideration: three basic and one PSAT score related. They are all equally important because if you do not meet all of the qualifications, you cannot participate in the program. The 3 basic qualifications you need to meet are: Take the PSAT during your junior year (3rd year) of high school Plan to enroll in college full-time by the fall after your graduate from high school Be a US Citizen or US Permanent resident who plans to become a US Citizen Then there is the test score related qualification. The exact score qualifications vary from year to year and state to state, but typically, the top 3% of students (about 50,000 juniors) qualify to be in the program. The top 1% of students have the best shot at winning the scholarship. How Does the Selection Timeline Work? Let's go through when each step of the National Merit selection occurs and how it will affect you if you're chosen. October of Junior Year: You take the PSAT. April of Junior Year: 50,000 students are notified that they are potential National Merit Scholars and are asked to select 2 colleges thatthe National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) will send a reference. September of Senior Year: â…” of the 50,000 students (about 34,000) will receive Letters of Commendation (recognizing them for their academic achievement, but notifying them they are no longer in the running for a scholarship). The remaining â…“ of students (about 16,000) will advance as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. Semifinalists typically have PSAT scores of at least 201 to 222 (on the old 240 point scale). Again the reason for the large point discrepancy is that the winners are chosen by state. If your state has lower scores on average, you will be able to qualify with a lower score than in other states with higheraverage PSAT scores. The Semifinalists are asked to submit applications for scholarship considerations. I will not go into detail on the scholarship application in this article. For more information on what is required for the National Merit Scholarship application and how to craft the strongest application read our other article. February of Senior Year: Semifinalists who advance to the Finalist round will be notified. About 15,000 of 16,000 Semifinalists advance. March of Senior Year: The 8,900 Finalists who are selected for a scholarship (out of the 15,000 Finalists) will be notified. NOTE: not all of these 8,900 Finalists receive a $2,500 one-time National Merit Scholarship. Through the program, students may be offered a National Merit Scholarship, a Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship, or a College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship. (I will explain how students are selected for scholarships in more depth below.) How Do You Know If You Probably Won’t Get a Scholarship? Obviously, if you are not notified in April or if you receive a Letter of Commendation in September, you know you will not be advancing to the Semifinalist round. Therefore, youwill not be in contention for a National Merit Scholarship or one of the other scholarships. Additionally, if your score is not in the top 1%, you don't have a great chance of advancing to the Semifinalist round (the â…” of students who receive Letters of Commendation and do not advance to Semifinalists typically have scores in the top 2-3%).Once you have advanced to the Semifinalist round, you have about a 50-50 chance of receiving a scholarship (since half the Semifinalists receive scholarships: 8,900 of 16,000). How Do You Know If You Have a Good Chance of Getting the Scholarship? If your score is in the top 1% (for your state), you have a good chance of getting the scholarship. However, the final step in consideration for the scholarship is your application and the National Merit Scholarship Program acknowledges that scholarship recipients are chosen â€Å"based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.† Once you are selected as a Semifinalist and submit your application, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation takes all of the following into consideration when deciding on scholarships:â€Å"the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores [SAT and PSAT], the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay.† If you have a very strong transcript (as close to 4.0 GPA on 4.0 scale with challenging course load of AP or IB classes) and a very high SAT score (close to 2400 on the old scale or close to 1600 on the new SAT),in addition to having a PSAT score in the top 1%, you have a solid chance of receiving a scholarship. Victory! What Is the Difference Between National Merit Scholarships and the Other Scholarships Offered? According to the National Merit website, National Merit Scholarships are $2500 single payment scholarships, which are awarded â€Å"without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans.†All Finalists are considered for this scholarship. I will give a brief explanation of the other types of scholarships, but for a more in-depth one, check out our other article. Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards are awarded based on each Corporate sponsor’s criteria. Some â€Å"designate their awards for children of their employees or members, for residents of a community where a company has operations, or for Finalists with career plans the sponsor wishes to encourage. These scholarships may either be renewable for four years of undergraduate study or one-time awards.† The amount for these Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships varies by company. College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards are awarded to â€Å"Finalists who have been accepted for admission and have informed NMSC by [through their application] that the sponsor college or university is their first choice.†You can only receive one of these College-sponsored Merit Scholarships if you were accepted to the university that you told National Merit was your first choice. Also, if you were accepted to your first choice college and choose not to attend that university, you will forfeit your scholarship. The amount of these scholarships vary by school, but each scholarship will be between $500 and $2000 per year. These scholarships are renewable up to 4 years. You have little control over which scholarship you will receive. All three of types of scholarships are equally prestigious and receiving one is no better than receiving another from an academic standpoint (though it may be better from a financial standpoint). Business Environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Business Environment - Essay Example Therefore, it is sound to assert that the variations in demand and supply for any economic resources, and the country’s practices contribute to its growth and competence at a global platform. The following discussion seeks to highlight economic perspectives in different versions with reference to their effects to the economic environment. P4: Explanation of how economic systems attempt to allocate resources effectively Despite the two country’s economic practices, UK practices the mixed enterprise approach whereby some resources belong to the national government thus limiting any probable exploitation of the citizens (Dransfield, 2004, p. 98). For instance, the country owns majority of the shares in those firms operating in products, which seem critical for human welfare. Such a resolution enables the UK to expressly influence companies’ decision-making processes in for the benefit of the citizens’ benefit. Further, the UK is able to use the mandate expres sed by its constitution’s to influence the privatization of companies in order to create wealth to the citizens. Individuals own the remaining resources, but there are regulations enforced by the government to ensure that that the practices are ethical and beneficial to the citizens. On the contrary, the military command economy restrains the local population from the exclusive indulgence into businesses that may lead to the exploitation of resources for economic prosperity. Arguably, the country owns 95% of the industries leaving a 5% margin for its citizens. The socialist approach thus tends to practice a monopoly approach in the allocation of resources, a factor that deters increment in the GDP and leads to increased poverty levels. Economists explain that U.S.A sets an analytical approach to the economic issues and establishes fiscal policies to stimulate growth, control amount of money in supply, dictate inflation rates of the dollar, and subsequently reduce the unemploy ment levels. The United States is observant on whether the factors will affect the country positively or negatively in the end (Arnold, 2007, p. 55). Analysts describe that the US free market enterprise economy allows for the room of innovation thus; the country’s entrepreneurs have the ability to improve products that in turn lead to economic growth since they are able to earn returns on their investments, create employment, and remit taxes to the federal government (Rodrik, 2007, p. 67). P5: The impact of high taxes and high interest rates The influence of high taxes on employees is a factor born from the Keynesian theory. Theoretical arguments are that enforcement of high taxes to a country’s employee population is a significant approach to reducing the rate of inflation since the approach diminishes the rate of individual expenditures. The factual further increases productivity in the economy since the government’s accrued revenues are spent on utilities suc h as infrastructure, and the provision of other resources to the entire population (Arnold, 2007, p, 58). The approach is significant in shaping up an economy in accordance to changes in demand and supply with a perception that whenever the supply shifts to an increase or decrease, the prices will remain constant since the population will bear the existing ability to purchase a given quantity of a product. On the other hand, the impact of executing high interest to business organizations remains an ill

Comparison of thinprep needle rinse samples versus direct smear Essay

Comparison of thinprep needle rinse samples versus direct smear techniques for fine neddle aspiration biopsies of head and neck lesions - Essay Example As a result, the pathologists and clinicians are to depend on the conveniences of a particular method that is most pertinent to the circumstance. A series of researches was led on the comparative diagnostic accuracy of the two techniques of FNA and their popularity among the clinicians and the pathologists (Frost et al, 1998). An analysis of the studies that have been led on the evaluation and the development of the techniques of Fine Needle Aspiration show an encouraging support for the ThinPrep technique of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies and trace the significant attempts in avoiding the pitfalls in the technique. In general, researchers are of the opinion that the accuracy of FNA at any site in the head and neck depends on both the skill and knowledge of the sites of the individual who will perform the FNA biopsies. As Layfield (2007) says, ‘Studies have shown that FNA is most accurate when the individual interpreting the FNA is the same individual who obtained the aspirate material’ (p. 798). In order to evaluate the performance of the FNA at the sites in the head and neck studies have had to revolve around the following questions: As far as the procedure of biopsy involves the obtainment of tissue, cell, or other specimen for diagnostic purposes, Fine Needle Aspiration has always played a crucial role as an initial technique of collecting them from a number of sites of human body. Indeed FNA is applied at a number of sites within the head and neck. The pressing appeal of the technique lies in several factors such rapidity, inexpensiveness, high convenience, low morbidity and necessarily in a relatively high diagnostic accuracy (Lester 2007). The amenability that areas in the head and neck show to this technique is mainly due to its capability to overcome the structural obstructions and barriers of the sites such as

Managing People Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Managing People - Essay Example If the geographical scope, financial strength, and wide customer base fail to persuade someone about the prominence of Starbucks as an icon of the corporate world, one can come up with a long list of laurels and awards that the company holds under its name, highlighting its success and reputation (Clark, 2007, p. 427; Michelli, 2006, p. 387). Zagat’s Survey of National Chain Restaurants for the year 2010 identified Starbucks as â€Å"No. 1 Best Coffee† and â€Å"No.1 Most Popular Quick Refreshment Chain†. For the past decade, it has appeared on the Fortune’s list of â€Å"Most Admired companies in America† and â€Å"The 100 Best Companies to Work for† (Mangold, 2010, p. 82). Quite understandably, a significant portion of this impeccable success enjoyed by Starbucks comes from its ability to manage, effectively and efficiently, its human resource. As a service oriented business, employees determine the customer service quality of the company, represent the company and their productivity determines the overall productivity of the organisation (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2007, p. 97). This paper is an attempt to discuss the leadership, organisational culture, organisational structure, organisational learning and employee motivation techniques employed by Starbucks. The paper argues that the prime leadership for Starbucks comes from Howard Schultz, for most parts, has appeared as a transformational leader. In fact, fitting the profile of a transformational leader, has allowed Schultz to inspire and create many more leaders in the company who have assisted in driving the growth by providing a wonderful customer service experience (Behar, 2007, p. 489). The culture of the company can be classified as collaborative work culture, one where much importance is placed on employee empowerment, employee engagement and worker welfare. More importantly, it is the decentralised, flat and matrix structure is the prime entity, which supports s uch as a work culture through promoting open and efficient communication amongst employees (Gilbert, 2008, p. 111). Moreover, the employee motivation at Starbucks can be understood through the application of Expectancy theory and Equity theory of Motivation. Besides, the above mentioned points, the paper will also outline a change management processes for the company and would provide recommendations based on the findings and analysis. Findings and Analysis Leadership There is evidence to believe that, Howard Schultz has been a transformational leader for Starbucks. The prime reason for it is rooted in the fact that Schultz, right from the very beginning had a vision in mind. It was in the early 1980s Howard Schultz, the current CEO, Chairman and President of the company, joined Starbucks as head of marketing. Schultz, after a trip from Italy, realised that to those people, coffee meant much more than just a drink. It was an experience, glue holding together people and their convers ations and bringing them closer (Schultz & Yang, 1999, p. 27). Schultz landed upon the idea of creating coffee houses where coffee becomes an enchanting and relaxing experience rather than a mere product. Jerry Baldwin had left the

Operant Applications Essay Example for Free

Operant Applications Essay Self actualization is at the pinnacle of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which examines the order by which human actions are geared towards. According to Maslow, in order to have the other needs, the basic needs have to be satisfied first . Only upon satisfying the physiological needs are the other needs considered. As such, the graduation in level suggests that self-actualization is the most difficult level to attain because of the preconditions that need to be satisfied in order to advance. According to Maslow, this is the most difficult to achieve due to its nature. It is not an absolute fact but is relative and therefore difficult to attain. The teachings of Maslow have shown that due to the relative nature of self actualization it is possible that a person may have achieved this but has not realized such and is therefore incapable of self actualization. In order to be self actualized, Maslow stated that there is a need for inner exploration and action. Man needs to realize his internal self and come to terms with such. It is this motivation which leads a person to self-actualization. This is problematic on several levels which explains why Freud had a different perspective on the matter. While Maslow derived his theory from Freud, Freud’s teaching was different in that these innate impulses are caused by the developments in the human psyche and the subconscious. There is no innate mechanism but rather the logical effect of the interactions of the different personalities and parts of the human mind. The motivation comes not from the desire for self-actualization but from human behavior. From a cognitive point of view, this hierarchy of needs and self actualization is a function of the perturbations that an autonomous system needs. It is not so much self actualization, from this perspective, as it is the perceived competence to satisfy the basic needs in due time. There are, therefore, three main components, material, cognitive and subjective. As such, self actualization is hampered by subjective incompetence which is caused during childhood that act as an inhibitor preventing the further development of cognitive competence.

The Death Penalty Debate Essay -- Papers Capital Punishment Essays Pap

The Death Penalty Debate The issue of the death penalty is widely disputed. So disputed that maybe I shouldn’t have picked this topic. But nevertheless, the death penalty is an issue that needs to be addressed. Should the death penalty be abolished from our criminal justice system? Well, that depends on whom you ask. If you ask me†¦ no. I personally don’t see anything wrong with the death penalty because there are a lot of criminals that are just too dangerous to society and death is the only punishment they deserve. I know that it is in the eighth amendment that prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, and I can’t think of a greater punishment for a crime than death, but I believe that exceptions should be made. Despite U.S. Supreme Court rulings to the contrary, many death penalty opponents consider capital punishment in and of itself to be cruel and unusual. They believe the death penalty to be a barbarous practice that should be discarded. Specific methods of execution also frequently come under attack as violating the Eighth Amendment. Death penalty advocates counter that the framers of the Constitution took capital punishment for granted, and did not consider it cruel and unusual. Some proponents of the death penalty believe some methods of execution, such as lethal injection, are more humane than others. (http://ethics.acusd.edu/death_penalty.html) From 1930, the first year for which statistics are readily available from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, to 1967, 3,859 persons were executed. During this period, over half (54%) of those executed were black, 45 % were white, and the remaining 1% were members of other racial groups -- American Indians (19), Filipino (13), Chinese (8), and Japanese (2). Crisis of Modern American Masculinity :: Essays Papers

Crisis of Modern American Masculinity I think every man between 20 and 40 needs to read Elizabeth Gilbert's "The Last American Man". Without going into details (like I said, you should read the book), this is a biography/profile of Eustace Conway - a man who is, among other things, capable of and prefers to (or would prefer to) live the kind of frontier lifestyle we have read about: hunting and gathering his food, living in a house he built using his own hands, making his own clothes from the skins of animals he captured, etc. I suspect that for many people the story, at least initially, will arouse the sort of Romantic feelings that tend to come with fantasies of a "simple life" of rugged self-sufficiency. However, even for those who are quite certain that they prefer their modern urban lifestyle (air conditioning, direct deposit, grocery stores, ebay, cable TV, &c.), I think this book raises fundamental questions about what it means to be a man at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The problem, as I see it, is that we have not re-defined masculinity for the modern age. In the old days, masculinity was measured by (1) physical abilities, particularly strength, but also skill, (2) power/success/wealth, and (3) sexual prowess. The first can be developed through education and hard work, the second could be acquired through the application of the first, and the third, well, either you got it or you don't, but locker-room bragging can always make up for any lacks, especially if you got the first two. Boys growing up in such a society work to develop their physical abilities and learn how to apply them most efficaciously, thus becoming a "man". This makes sense when a man might be faced with the challenge of building shelter on the prairie or raising crops, but us modern urban men are unlikely to face such challenges. Of course, we are not unprepared for the challenges of a modern urban lifestyle. Our education generally provides such life-sustaining skills as linear algebra, the performing arts, and information systems management. The educational system is successful enough to allow most of us to get jobs that pay us enough to afford all the requirements of a modern urban lifestyle: housing, food, clothing, entertainment, transportation, etc. The trouble is that while education has more or less kept pace with the advance of civilization, our notions of masculinity have not.

A Theory in Crisis Essay

People are naturally selfish, greedy and will always think about themselves especially during difficult times. That is even scientifically proven by Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution – Natural Selection, â€Å"Natural selection eliminates inferior species gradually over time. † It is the only way to survive. And yet there are still a few good men who would go out of their comfort zones to bring justice onto the table. Willie Stark had enjoyed his fair share of both the good and the bad. â€Å"Guilty of dishonest practices, as bribery; without integrity; crooked† (Stein, 1975, p. 302). Corruption can be a politician’s worst nightmare or his best friend. Sometimes, you do it against your will. But in the end, you are consumed by it, just like any other power hungry crazed individual, believing that they can make a difference. Willie Stark believed in it too. Willie was just like any ordinary farmer’s son. He grew up in the South and is employed as Mason City’s county treasurer. He wanted to make a difference by giving light into a controversy. He set out a campaign against an alleged county schoolhouse construction contract. He was working for Dolph Pillsbury, the County sheriff, who happened to favor the bid of a certain J. H. Moore over all the others. The fact that J. H. Moore did not have the lowest bid only brought more suspicion as to why he was chosen. Willie fought this, as he was on the side of Jeffers Construction, the one having placed the lowest bid. Eventually, the County sheriff got what he wanted and J. H. Moore won the contract, Willie lost his job. But he stood by his conviction and he was rewarded. Years later, the schoolhouse met a tragic fate due to the low quality construction materials that was used by J. H. Moore. The building collapsed, killing three and injuring several others. I believe this moment was one of the turning points of the story. It shows that when you stood by what you tried to fight for until the very end, the people would know of this and you will gain their sympathy. Hence, he ran for governor as planned by existing political figures. Although he did not win, this became his driving force to study law, and later to run again for the same position. Willie Stark’s character in Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men is that of a governor surrounded by all the people mixed in a perfect concoction to produce the dictionary meaning of political differences powered by blackmail, alliances and corruption. I believe that a person’s morality is gravely affected by circumstances of everyday living. One day you believe in the political system, the next day you probably would not. Maybe you encountered a bully police officer, a person trying to blackmail you, or a pickpocket. A person can be as hard as a rock when he or she stands by his/her moral and ethical principles. But even the strongest rocks are destroyed especially by secrets that are meant to damage your public image and meant to shake the very foundation of your moral beliefs. I believe that Willie Stark was corrupted by the political system. And I would like to point out three reasons why. As I have mentioned, Willie wanted to correct what he thought was wrong with the schoolhouse bid event when he stood up for the Jeffers Construction. Unknown to him, the County sheriff will still be the one to call the shots since he has authority over every single thing that happens. I believe this showed how much Willie was not in favor of set-ups in the political hierarchy, and an honest man would accept losing his job rather than sticking up to the misdoings of his superior. Another circumstance pointing to the righteousness of Willie was when he gave his support to his opponent Sam MacMurfee during his first time to run for governor. He found out the plan when Sadie Burke revealed it to him and to the dismay of all those who worked for his campaign, he announced his support to his rival on his big speech. Lastly, his efforts to build a free-for-all hospital sum up his desire to help the needy. What I see is a person who believes in the morality of things but is just caught up in the immorality and corruption that is inevitable in politics. Right from the start he was good, and he never stopped being good even if he has to do bad to be good. References AllAboutScience. org. (2002). Darwin’s Theory of Evolution – A Theory in Crisis.
